Using A Cover To Protect Your Camper During The Winter When You're Out Of Town
Posted on: 23 January 2018
Going out of town for the winter is a common act for many retired people, especially if their area suffers from heavy snow. Unfortunately, this snow may damage the roof of their camper while they are gone. Thankfully, a camper cover can help protect it from serious damage.
Snow Can Damage A Camper Roof
While you are out of town for the winter avoiding the snow, it is collecting on the roof of your camper. Most campers are sturdy enough to withstand a collection of snow on their top. Unfortunately, a large enough load may cause an unstable roof that collapses. There's little worse than coming home from a great summer vacation to find your camper destroyed.
As a result, it is important to take steps to protect your roof. One of the most efficient and inexpensive of these methods is to install a camper cover. The snow will slide off of the camper when it has a cover and keep it safe from serious snow-related damage. It also helps save you on winter-storage fees in a garage or indoor storage center.
Cover Types Vary Heavily
Carefully study the shape of your camper body to ensure you choose a cover that fits it. For example, your camper may have a slide-out seating area that folds up into your camper when it isn't in use. A good camper cover for this type of RV will take the size and shape of this seating area into account to be easier to install over your camper.
And for material types, it is a good idea to choose a plastic canvas cover. That's because this material is slick and will let the snow slide right off your camper. Even better, it is sturdy enough to withstand a wide range of weathering damage. This fact means your camper will be safe from snow while you are out of town for the winter.
Installing One Properly
When installing a camper cover for the winter, it is important to do so just before you relocate for the season. A good time to do so is typically around late October or early November. This installation time should help to protect your camper from excessive snow while you are out of town. Thankfully, they are very easy to install.
Before installing, make sure that you remove any items that may interfere with the process, such as rain gutters and other sharp items. Then, you just need to unroll the cover over the top of the camper from the back to the front. After this, you need to flatten it down on the sides to help avoid snow collection on the sides. At this point, you buckle the top down using the snaps. Try to keep it as taut as possible so that snow will slide off the top and sides more easily.
These simple steps should help the snow slide off of your camper roof and protect it from serious damage while you are out of town for the winter. So when you get back from your seasonal relocation, you should find a camper that is ready to go out to your favorite camping spot.
